Imigators lead the waters. Fletchers bend the shafts. Carpenters bend the wood. The wise control themselves.


治水者は水を計画的に導く。矢作りは矢を曲げる。大工は木を曲げる。[心の]清浄な[賢]者は、自己を調制する。

Like a thoroughbred horce struck by the whip, be strenuous, be filled with spiritual yearning. By faith and moral purity, by effort and meditation, by investigation of the truth, by being rich in knowledge and virtue, and by being mindful, destroy this unlimited suffering.


賢い馬が鞭に奮い立つが如く、[輪廻に対する]厭離心を熱心に生起させ、信仰・戒・精進・定・法決定・明行具足であり、[物事をよく]記憶する人は、少なからざる[輪廻の]苦を捨てる。

Only rarely is there a man in this world who, restrained by modesty, avoids reproach and keeps himself awake, as a thoroughbred horse that gives no cause to be whipped.


賢い馬が鞭に[機会を与えない]如く、慚によって[行動を]抑止し、睡眠を取り除き[目覚めている]人は、この世間に存在する。

Even though well-adorned, yet if he would poised, calm, controlled and established in the holy life, having laid aside violence towards all beings, he truly is a brahmana, a samana, and a bhikkhu.


例え、荘厳な[衣装を着て]も、[普段と]同じであり、その行動は静寂で[自己を]調御し、[善い結果に]導く梵行をおこなう。一切の生きとし生けるものに対して杖を下に置く彼こそバラモン[＝阿羅漢]であり、沙門であり、比丘である。

Neither going about naked, nor matted hair, nor mud, nor fasting, nor lying on the hard ground, nor smearing oneself with ashes and dust, nor sitting on the heels (in penance) can purify a mortal who has not overcome doubts.


裸で修行するも、結髪も、[身に]泥[を塗る]も、又断食も、地に臥すも、塵垢にまみれるも、しゃがんだままの修行も、それらは[正しい教えに対する]疑いを乗り越えない[限り]、人間の[心を]浄化することはできない。

Sharp pain, disaster, bodily unjury, serious illness, derangement of mind, trouble from the government, grave charges, loss of relatives, loss of wealth, or houses destroyed by a ravaging fire; and upon dissolution of the body that ignorant man will be born in hell.


激痛、[体力の]減退、あるいは身体の障害や重病、心の散乱、国王からの迫害、あるいは激しい誹謗、あるいは親族の滅亡、あるいは財産の損失、そして又火災による家の消失を被る。そして智慧のない人は[自分の]身体を砕き、[死後]彼は地獄に堕ちる。

He who uses violence against those who are unarmed, and offends those who are inoffensive, will soon come upon one of these ten states:


無防備な人を杖でたたく人、あるいは過誤なき人に怒る人は、[次の]十の状態の中の随一なものを直ぐに被る。

A fool while doing evil deeds does not know them as being evil; but that fool suffers for his evil deeds like one who is burnt by fire.


愚者はいろいろな悪をおこなっている時も[悪とは]知らない。[大蛇死霊が]火に焼かれて苦しむ如く、自らの[悪]業によって智慧のない人は苦しむ。

As with a stick the cowherd drives his cattle to the pasture, so also, Aging and Death drive the life out of beings.


牧牛者が杖をたたき牛を牧場へ急かせるように、かくの如く老いと死は、生きとし生けるものの寿命を[死の淵へ]急かせる。

If, like a broken gong, you silence yourself, you are sure to realize Nibbana; there will be no harshness in you.


害破されたる銅鑼の如く、もし、汝自身[の心]が動かなかったならば、これが、涅槃に達した[境地]である。汝には憤激は存在しない。
